Hi! My name is Heather Asiyanbi, and I launched Pens and Proof in August 2020 because I worked in the marketing department of a law firm, and it was sucking the life out of me. I needed some professional joy, and after thinking about what I really love to do, I realized that I am a great editor, and I want to be of service. Working on Pens and Proof took some of the sting away from the work I was doing for the firm.
At the end of January 2021, I had the incredible opportunity to take Pens and Proof full time, so I took a leap of faith to make it my sole focus. I was absolutely terrified (still terrified) of failing, but through word-of-mouth, primarily, and membership in three groups on Facebook, I have been consistently busy. I edit children’s books and adult nonfiction focusing on "How-to" subjects that focus on relationships (improving, coping, leaving, etc.), health and wellness, and making money.
After six months of working full time in Pens and Proof, I realized I could really do this, like for real. I had fairly consistent cash flow, and I was in contact every week with potential clients. I was actually paying all my bills from my business! What?! I never imagined it could happen within a year of launching, and here I am!
What I’ve learned is that when you work in your zone of genius and you surround yourself – in real life and online – with people who are in your corner; when you are authentic; when you conduct your business with integrity; when you deliver on your promise; and when you give back to the circle that gives to you, success isn’t even a question. The messages I get from authors with whom I’ve already worked, independent publishers who need an editor for clients, and inquiries I receive from brand-new prospective clients re-affirms that I made the right decision to work for myself to help predominantly female authors bring their stories to life.
My experience comes from more than 20 years as a community journalist, editor, marketing and communications manager, and public relations professional as well as a lifetime reader who really needs another bookshelf.
